Hej København!

After an unexpected overnight in Munich, I made it to Copenhagen on 6/27. Emma and her family could not be more welcoming. Feeling so grateful to have a Danish fam! They are so accommodating, really making it feel like a home away from home. And it’s always great to practice my Spanish with her dad! Emma and I have hardly stopped since I got here, always out and about. It’s hard not to be when the sun sets at 12 and starts to rise at 3:30!!

Smørrebrød all day please!

One of my absolute Denmark favs- smørrebrød brunch! The best for indecisive brunchers, as you get to choose a little of everything. Some of my favorites here were the fresh smoked salmon and a custard “spandauer”, or as we call it at home, a Danish! This was a wonderful way to spend my first morning here (and by morning I mean 3pm, because we have been sleeping LATE!)

Our spontaneous decision…

The best thing about no set itinerary! After our day walking around the city ,we decided to hop on a 6:30pm train to Hamburg, Germany from Copenhagen Central. This turned out to be quite the journey: 4.5 hour train ride and then a 30 minute walk to the last minute hotel we booked. Luckily, no one even begins to go out until after midnight, so we pulled up right on time! For my first time in a German city, I’d say this was a pretty memorable experience! Emma and I certainly walked away with some stories.

Guten Morgen Hamburg!

Walking out of the club, the sun was already rising. This was a record for me! As we walked back to our hotel for the night, I remember turning the corner to pass the most majestic looking buildings just casually on every corner. Emma is of course unfazed by this type of thing, but it’s something the American mind cannot comprehend!! I didn’t end up falling asleep till around 6:45, and we had to rush out for check-out just a few hours later. We spent our morning dozing off in a park before catching a train back to Copenhagen.

Days in Denmark

Spent the next few days enjoying Denmark! Since Emma lives in Birkerød, about 25 minutes outside of Copenhagen, I got to see true Danish everything, not just touristy areas. However I did make her take me to Nyhavn street (with the iconic houses and boats) and Christiania (town without laws) because I loved them last time. We walked soooo much, ate good food, and I even got to meet a few of her friends. The weather was absolutley perfect- warm but you need a light sweater in the evenings. My last day here, we went to the mall outside of Copenhagen to pick out a backpack for Emma to take to our next stops!!

Farvel!

My last night here, we got home from dinner at around 11 and packed up, because we had to leave Emma’s house to get to the bus stop at 2:20. No sleep!! But all worth it to be onto the next place! Sad to say goodbye to this part of the trip, but it’s such a gift to always have a reason to come back and a place to stay.
