This was our toughest day yet… but at least it involved a pain au chocolat and a cappuccino! We landed in Nice at around 8am, absolutely exhausted after we packed our bags and headed to the bus stop at 2am in Birkerød. I was already falling asleep on my backpack in the bus. I slept the whole plane ride, waking up to the mediterranean blue outside my window!! It is crazy how different Northern Europe is from Southern, and you can tell right away from the vibe of the airport. Since neither of us speak French, navigating our ride to the hostel was a lot for our sleep deprived selves. Especially because I was used to Emma being a pro at getting us around in Denmark, where I just got to mindlessly follow. Anyways, we ended up taking a taxi to our hostel, where we came to find out we couldn’t check in until 3pm. So, we dropped our luggage, grabbed breakfast and lounged in a park!
After an amazing nap, we ventured out for dinner (pizza here is amazing, I guess because we are so close to Italy!) and saw the city at night. Emma and I decided that Nice is a Latin mix: bits of Rome, Paris, Alicante, Madrid, etc. I love it!!! We then sat on the beach after dinner, where everyone was out, even on a Wednesday night. The way it’s so lively is one of my favorite parts about Southern European cities.
We woke up on Thursday still exhausted but wanting to explore. We made our way to the Nice Ville train station with no plan, but ended up hopping on the next train to Monaco. It was crazy to technically be in another country, another one checked off my list! We ate some pasta for lunch and walked and walked and walked. It was so cool to see all of the crazy cars and designer stores. I think it’s the bougiest/wealthiest place I’ve ever been. We spent some time at the city beach and dipped in the med, my fav! We also saw the Monte Carlo casino and all of the yachts at the port. Emma had a cold and was starting to feel really sick this day, so it was a lot to walk so much, but we got through and I’m so glad we did. This was a brave choice for our first day, but it helped us understand the Côte d’Azur train system so much better.
